Hirotaka Fujibayashi

March 1, 2023 to August 31, 2023

Hirotaka Fujibayashi is a PhD candidate in International Relations and Political Science at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies (IHEID) in Geneva, Switzerland. His research, at the intersection of international relations and comparative politics, is focused on the politics and political economy of immigration and refugee reception. Two broad questions motivating his research are: (1) how sovereign states respond to the international migration of refugees and asylum-seekers; and (2) why states behave the way they do.

His ongoing dissertation project explores the cross-country variation of refugee and asylum policies. Using mixed methods and an original dataset, his dissertation offers a thorough account of why some states restrict the entry and post-entry rights of refugees and asylum-seekers while others do not. Through the project, he seeks to lay a solid foundation for the political economy analysis of refugee and asylum policies.

He holds an MA in International Studies and an LLB from the University of Tokyo, Japan. He served as a visiting researcher at the Institute of International and Civil Security at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, UAE, from 2016-2017.
