Doctoral Candidate, Literature, UC San Diego
Bianca Negrete Coba is a mixed-race Chicana from west Chula Vista, a border town in San Diego, CA, and the first in her family to attend a four-year university. She is currently a PhD Candidate in Literature, Cultural Studies with a Specialization in Critical Gender Studies. Bianca's research highlights palimpsestic histories and stories of Chicanx displacement and Indigenous dispossession in what is known as San Diego and Los Angeles. She thinks about intertwining cultural and environmental impact in these communities and asks what it means for one community to be displaced on land dispossessed from another. She also considers how the border impacts Chicanx and Indigenous folks in what is known as Southern California.
Bianca holds a BA in English with a Minor in Writing from UC Merced, an MA in Interdisciplinary Humanities from UC Merced, and an MA in Literature from UCSD. She is a previous Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Fellow, UCSD/SDCCD PATH Fellow, UCSD Shen Fellow, and a current UCSD Center for Comparative Immigration Studies fellow finishing her dissertation titled "Chicanx Displacement Stories: From L.A.'s 'Chavez Ravine' to S.D.'s Barrio Logan." When she is not researching, writing, or teaching, Bianca can be found writing poetry, volunteering in the Community Archive at the Chicano Park Museum and Culture Center, and lovingly mothering her silly and tenacious toddler.
